Phyllis & Jerry Meshulam, from California USA

Poet, Editor, Poet-teacher, and Poetry Out Loud Coordinator Phyllis Meshulam from California United States delivered a talk in Department of English. The talk was organised by Almni Association of Department of English with Rotary Club Bhavnagar as a part of cultural exchange programme. Our special thanks to active Rotarian Prof. Himal Pandya,​ and Prof. Dilip Barad​ for inviting the speakers to Department. Prof. Sunil Sharma​, Principal of Valiya Arts and Commerce College was the guest of honour of the function. Alumnus Dr.Chetan Trivedi​, Dr.Dhvani Joshi​, and Dr. Heenaba Zala​ attended the talk with the students of Department. The function began with floral welcome. Hand picked flowers were chosen by Nidhi Jasani​, Rradha Ghevariya​, Ravi Bhaliya​, Bhumi Joshi​, Kishan Kubavat​, and Nikunj Bhatti​ from the garden of Department of English and floral welcome of the guests and the speaker preceeded by Semester 2 students Dodiya Meghana​, Monali Jethwa​ and Virji Bathvar​. Prof. Himal Pandya​ introduced Phyllis and Jerry Meshullam. Phyllis shared poems and interpreted nicely and displayed her poetic work art. She also displayed the poems of American Poets from www.cpits.org and  www.poetryoutloud.com The session turned into an interactive session and student participants asked meaningful questions to quench their poetic thirst and got satisfactory answers in the form of poetic elixir from Phyllis. Vaidehi Hariyani from Semester 2, and Dave Nimesh​ from semester 4 offered vote of thanks to Phyllis & Jerry​. As token of love a book was offered by Bhumi Joshi​ from Semester 4. Prof.+Sunil Sharma​ delivered a speech at last expressing his gratitude and it was followed by the inspirational words from the H.O.D. Dr. Dilip Barad.

"જવું ક્યાં જવાના સવાલો નડે છે,

પારદર્શક ત્વચાના સવાલો નડે છે." 

સ્વચ્છતાના પારાવાર પ્રશ્નોથી ભારત બાકાત નથી. એમાય જયારે શૌચ સંલગ્ન સળગતા સુગંધી પ્રશ્નો સામે ઉભાહોય, ત્યારે બધા વિલે મોઢે ભારમાં આવી જઈ એકમેક ની સામે ઓશિયાળા બની ઉભા રહે છે. સ્વચ્છતા અભિયાન માનનીય મોદી સાહેબે તો હાલ હાથ ધાર્યું છે, પરંતુ પરમાર સાહેબે આ સંવેદનશીલ પ્રશ્ન વિષયક ૨૦૦૧માં એક ટૂંકી વાર્તા 'પોલીટેકનીક' સ્વરૂપે રજુ કરેલી. અને અંગ્રેજી ભાષા સાહિત્ય ભવનના વિદ્યાર્થીઓ આ પ્રશ્નો પરત્વે સંવેદનશીલતા અનુભવી અને તે અંગે જાગરુક થયા. 

'જવું' શબ્દ અચરજ પમાડનારો છે, નઇ? કેટલા બધા અર્થોથી આચ્છાદિત આ શબ્દ 'જવું' છે!  શાહબુદ્દીન રાઠોડ ની એક ઉક્તિ આ સમયે યાદ આવી, 'કરુણતાની ચરમસીમાએ હાસ્ય નિષ્પન્ન થાય છે.' પુરુષોનું તો સમજ્યા પરંતુ જવાયોગ્ય સ્થાન મહિલાઓ માટે કેટલું કપરું છે એ પ્રશ્ન જીવલીના તથા ડેલાની બાઇઓનાં પાત્ર દ્વારા 'પોલીટેકનીક' વાર્તામાં મહેન્દ્રસિંહ એ માર્મિક રીતે રજુ કર્યો. આ વાર્તા એક ટ્રેજી કોમેડી છે. આપણા સમયમાં આપણે કેવી રીતે વ્યક્ત થવું? આપણા પ્રશ્નો ને કેવી રીતે વ્યક્ત કરી શકાય? એક સાહિત્ય સર્જક, એક કલાકાર આ પ્રશ્નોને કેવી રીતે જુએ છે અને  પોતાની કૃતિ દ્વારા આ પ્રશ્નો ની છણાવટ કેવીરીતે કરે છે તે બાબતે વિદ્યાર્થીઓને મહેન્દ્રસિંહ એ પોતાની કૃતિ દ્વારા તાદ્રશ ઉદાહરણ પૂરું પડ્યું.  

તળપદી ગુજરાતી એટલેકે લોકબોલીમાં લખાયેલ આ વાર્તા માત્ર મનોરંજક નથી પરંતુ સ્ત્રીઓના અને સમાજના 'જવા વિષયક' ગંભીર પ્રશ્નોથી સમાજ ને વાકેફ કરવાનું દાયિત્વ લેખક શ્રી મહેન્દ્રસિંહએ, ડેલા ની બાઇયુંના સંવાદ દ્વારા પ્રસ્તુત કર્યું. સમગ્ર સંવાદ ઘણો રસપ્રદ રહ્યો. ઉમાશંકર જોશી, સહાદત હસનઅલી મન્ટો, નહેરુદા, સુરેશ જોશી, હિમાંશી શેતલ વિગેરે સર્જકોના સંદર્ભોથી યુક્ત સંવાદ અંગ્રેજી ભવનના વિદ્યાર્થીઓ માટે જ્ઞાનાર્જનરૂપ રહ્યો.

'હાલો બેનું, ઉતાવળ કરો પછી ચોઘડિયું સારું નથી.'

'સવલી રોજ રાત ટાણે ડબલા વાળી વાત કરતી.'

'ડોશી રોન્કી'.

'જાનપક્ષની બાયુંએ મોહન થાળના બટાકા હારીપટ ઉલ્લાળેલા'.

'જીવી રસ્તામાં આવતા પરિચિત સ્થળોનો તાગ મેળવતી ગઈ'.

'સવારે ગાડીમાં જ બધા ફ્રેશ થઇ જાય'.

'નવી રામ સભાની માયા'.

'પણ હવે તો ડેલા માં સગવડ નઈ થઇ હોય?'.

'મને તો હવે ફીનાઈલની માયા લાગી'.

'આયા અમારી હરે ડબલે નીકળતી, ત્યારે શરમનો આવતી, ને અમદાવાદ ગઈ ને નવી નવાઈની સનેહ લત્તા થઇ સ!'

 

ખરેખર સ્વચ્છતા વિષયક વાતો જ ઘણી થાય છે. કેવળ હસી શકાય તેવું હોત તો સારું. જરા ગ્રામ્ય વિસ્તારો ભણી લટાર મારી જુઓ, ઘણા ઘરો માં શૌચાલયો નથી. એક સ્ત્રી હૃદય આ સંવેદના ને પારખી શકે. 

'દીવાલ ની બે બાજુએ ઉભેલો હું મને કડી મળી નથી શક્યો.'

ઘણા સંસ્કૃતિક શબ્દો નું ભાષાંતર કદાચ થાય પણ એ 'દાળ હારે બિસ્કીટ ખાવા જેવું લાગે'  જેમકે, 'બઠાવવું' 'ખંખોળિયું ખાવું', 'ઢીચણીયુ', 'રોન્કી' અને 'અક્ષત'. 

Sir, discussed another thought provoking issues of communication. Blogging vs. Traditional Communication; 'Postcard', an unexplored literary genre on which the writer is working on. It centres the paradoxical flavour of language. આ ઇટાલિયન પિઝ્ઝા અને બાજરાના રોટલા જેવું છે. How language is transforming, and what about those who witness this transformation? Texting affects language. People have created acronyms to save time, hens it becomes a cliche, a linguistic paradox such as JSK, tysm, JMJ. What about those who read this? And what about those who respond? Context matters.

Mr. Ashokbhai Patel, an expert Artist and an Art teacher, shared the colorful nectar of experience on Fine Arts Events in Youth Festival in S. B. Gardi Department of English on Thursday 24th September 2015, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University. Head of The Department; Prof. Dilip Barad, Lecturer; Dr. Heenaba Zala, attended the talk with the Students and Alumnus of Department of English. The talk was colorfully crafted for the Youth Festival Participants of the Department. Mr. Patel covered all the topics of Fine Arts Events such as Painting, Collage, Clay Modeling, Cartooning, Rangoli, On The Spot Topic Painting.. etc. with a proper description, caution and care, what should be done and what to avoid briefly.

Present Scenario of Indian Wild Life - Dr. Indra Gadhvi, Head of the Department of Mrine Science

 Dr. Indra Gadhvi, well-experienced personality and current Head of the department of Marine Science, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, was invited as a guest speaker on 21 September, 2013 as a part of Alumni activity at the Department of English. Honestly speaking, he is of very high profile of his long term career in the field of Zoology. It is very important that the readers of this report should recognize him first before reading the report.

About Dr. Indra Gadhvi

Dr. Indra Gadhvi is currently the Associate Professor and Head of the department of Marine Science. He has an extremely high weight of experience of teaching, research in his special subject, workshops, seminars and conferences held at national and international level. He has done his doctoral research on ‘Ecological and Behavioral Studies on the White ibis in Bhavnagar’ from Saurastra University.

Mahesh Dholiya, Anchor of the day

That was the very ebullient moment when Dr. Indra Gadhvi, Asso. Prof. and Head of the department of Marine Science spoke on his special subject “Present Scenario of Indian Wilde Life” with pictorial presentation. Mahesh Dholiya was an anchor of the day and with successful adjustment of the time, place and action, commenced the program at 4:15. With academic fervor, he introduced all who were present on that occasion. On behalf of Alumni Association, he welcomed guest speaker Dr. Gadhvi, Head of Marine Science Department, Dr. Dilip Barad, Head of the Department of English, former students and freshmen of the department. That was the genuine rapture that from the new and fresh bench, there was a student namely Lajja, invited Dr. Gadhvi as a part of history.

Dr. Gadhvi could bring such topic full of human beings, less reasonable and malevolent in the matter of a huge massacre of the animal and water world, quite pertinent to the human race. With striking images of dying, dead and would-be-dead animals of the hazardous situation were quite dominantly boomerang on the human world that is wholly depended on them. Dr. Gadhvi also portrayed various hobbies, interest and mater of fashionable men using the precious materials of animals. Most of the beautiful and comely races of birds and animals have been disrupted entirely from the earth. The living lives most captivated one, would only be imprisoned in the images in the text-books and the pupils and students would be studying them with ‘Alas’ if hunters kill them in bulk.

Dr. Gadhvi’s observation power seems much scrutinized in the sense that he had really good collection of these dreadful data which is now insurmountable for the government yet it works hard to protect the animals and birds but this will remain an Achilles Heel for the government. That day’s bulky information could not bring drowsy numbness among the audience. His graphical presentation became the subject of the audience’s eyes. His presentation from the humanistic approach was remarkably outstanding and didactic. His most ear-catching statement at the end of the presentation was that if the human race brings freedom to such a gullible race, perchance, almighty may keep bestowing manna in the form of real happiness otherwise. This problem may remain potential and permanently inexorable.

Dr. Gadhvi remained judgmental that the human race has to be philanthrope in the matter of guest animals and be responsible for their deterioration as well as development. He also told that we should not be apathetic about general problem, as Narayan Murthi says in his writing, “We are also apathetic about …we see serious problems around us but behave as if they are someone else’s responsibility.” It had been tough to encapsulate whole speech in a few syntaxes but as a part of the dignity, Amrutha gave a valedictory speech and offered him a vote of thanks. There was no doubt in saying that the audience supplied a big applause for such gigantic man of wild life. Dr. Gadhvi was honored with a little book called ‘Drop of Nectar’ by Sarayu as a part of a departmental tradition. At last, Dr. Dilip Barad, felt gratitude could thank Dr. Gadhvi for his precious time and sharing his knowledge of the wild life of India. Genuinely writing, time with Dr. Gadhvi was mesmerizing and awesome. Looking forward to you Dr. Gadhvi sir!
